Trying to visit every single restaurant in Ubud in two weeks is like trying to open all your advent calendar chocolate at the same time: impossible and frowned upon. Nobody NEEDS 24 miniature chocolates and 1 fun-size Mars bar in one sitting. Equally, nobody needs Mie Goreng three times a day in three different restaurants with three sides of deep fried wontons.

But alas! FOMO is a real thing so we must navigate Ubud cleverly – knowing we aren’t missing out on the best fried noodles and coconut ice cream (not together) it has to offer.

Let’s begin on Jl. Monkey Forest, the main road into Ubud centre. After frolicking in the forest with a few local macaques, it takes about 10 minutes to get to Watercress Cafe for some brunch, some incredible iced coffee and a couple of vegan yummies. Don’t worry, we’ll get to the Mie Goreng another time!

For now you can take a seat amongst the hipsters and admire the cute decor. Pull up a chair at one of the intimate tables-for-two or recline amongst the squishy cushions on the upholstered benches that frame the restaurant.

Don’t forget to take a quick peek at their vegan treats cabinet on your way in. I immediately eyed the Oreo cheesecake and was drooling even before I sat down.

The iced coffee is the best I’ve tasted in a long time, and the fresh fruit and veggie juices are cold, refreshing and oozing with goodness. Get down like a true Bali babe and order a whole fresh coconut from the bar or stick with one of their perfectly-styled lattes.

Ubud has no shortage of vegan eateries but this place is by far the best we found.

The energy ball craze has made it all the way over to Bali, so naturally we tried all three on offer: raw almond and chocolate, raw lemon and coconut and raw chocolate orange.

The Oreo cheesecake was as good as it looks too. If you’d rather, you can order a rustic breakfast of poached eggs over sweetcorn fritters or avocado on toast with chilli jam, sour cream and crispy bacon. They are equally impressive during lunch and dinner hours, with extra space upstairs, a cocktail menu to melt over and award-winning gourmet burgers.
